Tradition and Innovation United at Essex Cornerstone Chapter

A recent convocation of Essex Cornerstone Chapter No. 9968, held at the Hutton Masonic Centre, provided a powerful example of how Freemasonry in Essex continues to honour its traditions while confidently embracing innovation.

At the centre of the meeting was a remarkable milestone: the simultaneous admission of six candidates into the Royal Arch in a single ceremony, a first for Essex Freemasons. Delivering such a ceremony required careful planning, collaboration, and a willingness to explore new approaches, all while remaining firmly rooted in established ritual and symbolism.

The ceremony was led by First Principal Richard de la Plain, supported by his officers, with particular recognition due to a very busy Principal Sojourner, Jack Saunders. Using a newly adopted ceremonial format, introduced in Essex for the first time, the team demonstrated that innovation can enhance tradition rather than detract from it. The result was a ceremony that felt both authentic and refreshed, leaving a lasting impression on all present.

The meeting also reflected wider developments within modern Freemasonry. Joe Doherty, Chairman of the newly formed Essex White Ribbon Club, spoke about how the Club complements existing initiatives and works closely alongside the Essex Cornerstone Club and Essex Light Blues Club. New opportunities for engagement and participation were shared, reinforcing a growing focus on inclusion and connection.

What stood out most was how seamlessly everything came together. From the coordination of a complex ceremony to the wider message of collaboration and progress, the meeting offered a clear glimpse of Freemasonry’s future in Essex, one that respects its heritage while actively evolving to meet the needs of today’s members.
